Donor Spotlight: Friends of Robbie Foundation

Susan Killacky, Friends of Robbie Foundation secretary and board member, will never forget one of the late Robbie Zimmerer’s last concerns. “He wanted to know if people would remember him after he was gone,” said Susan. “And I said, absolutely they will, I’ll be sure of it.”

When the 27-year-old lost his battle with colon cancer in 2015, Susan and the rest of the Friends of Robbie Foundation raised nearly $95,000 for the Friends of Robbie Patient Support Fund for Young Adults with Cancer at Carol G. Simon Cancer Center. The fund has been assisting cancer patients with gift cards to purchase food, medicine and transportation and supplement daily living costs ever since.

The Friends of Robbie Foundation’s heartfelt mission of helping cancer patients feel less stressed about financial hardships is a calling Susan knows would make Robbie proud. “Robbie’s mom, Shirlee, gets so much satisfaction knowing that her son still lives on in all of us and those we are helping; it keeps her strong,” said Susan.

The rest of the foundation’s board members agree that their passion for helping as many patients as possible, in Robbie’s name, brings their mission alive. An annual golf outing and other fundraisers throughout the year help sustain the foundation so that it can continue its incredible work into the future – impacting even more lives.

“When you have people aligned with a common goal, it’s empowering,” said Matt Sweeney, vice president of USI Insurance Services, a prominent Friends of Robbie Foundation golf sponsor. “Everyone has been touched by someone who has had cancer, which gave me no reason not to get involved. It’s easy to do a good thing.”

Extraordinary compassion for cancer patients makes the Friends of Robbie Foundation a valuable partner to Morristown Medical Center, offering vital assistance so patients can focus on what’s most important – getting well and healing completely.
