NEED

From its first coronary bypass in 1998, Morristown Medical Center has tirelessly confronted the challenges posed by heart disease. Today, through Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, we operate the largest cardiovascular program statewide and one of the largest nationwide. However, despite our size, patient demand compels us to grow forward.

We operate the largest cardiovascular program statewide and one of the largest nationwide. However, despite our size, patient demand compels us to grow forward.

The Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute has grown so significantly since its inception that patient demand has nearly outpaced the capacity to provide care. We currently operate at 99 percent inpatient occupancy. Outpatient labs are also operating at nearly 100 percent capacity, and there is a four-to-six-week wait for non-invasive procedures. An aging population and the rise in chronic disease are driving demand. This will only increase as seniors are expected to soon reach 28 percent of the population in our service area.

THE PLAN

Two new floors are needed to meet demand. This additional 55,400 sq. ft. of space — including 72 patient beds in new private rooms — means all cardiac patients will once again be under the same roof, improving safety, efficiency and workflow. Additionally, the hospital seeks to add a dedicated MRI machine, exclusively for cardiac patients. And, although the construction for some phases is complete, the fundraising continues for all projects.

TOMORROW'S CHALLENGE
THE GOAL

The goal is to expand our existing space to design a patient-centered, healing environment that also enhances the family and visitor experience. Seventy-two new private patient rooms, improved patient interaction and workflow, along with a new MRI machine, dedicated specifically for our Gagnon patients, will all be part of meeting demand and providing the care our patients deserve.

A HEALING ENVIRONMENT
.

All patient rooms will be spacious single-bed suites that will minimize noise and use therapeutic natural light. These changes will also enhance patient safety and reduce the spread of infection. Equipment will be hidden, which will make the overall inpatient experience less intimidating.

PATIENT & FAMILY-CENTERED DESIGN
.

Suites will have a private bath with shower and comfortable seating, including a recliner, a work space, and a sleep space to accommodate overnight guests. Four family/visitor lounges, a meditation room and a large multi-purpose space for patient education, support group meetings and family-physician consultations will also be available.

WORKFLOW & TECHNOLOGY
.

Three stations per floor will afford our awardwinning nursing staff an unobstructed view of, and quick access to, patient rooms. A separate but centralized charting area will improve communication and collaboration among staff. Essential equipment housed behind the bed of each room will reduce trip hazards and visual clutter in the rooms and hallways. A new dedicated cardiac MRI scanner housed along with the two existing MRI scanners will enable cardiologists to scan two patients simultaneously, for up to 12 patients per day.
