NEED

As the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center enters its third decade, we’re poised to begin a new chapter of patient care. Cancer therapies, however, have grown more complex and demand on Carol G. Simon Cancer Center’s facilities is increasing. To ensure we can provide the highest level of patient-centric, multidisciplinary care with an eye toward research and innovation, we need to grow forward. The hospital has undertaken these projects in multiple phases of construction, and even though some are complete or near completion, the fundraising continues.

Enhancements are needed so the highest level of patient-centric, multidisciplinary care can be provided with an eye toward research and innovation.

Carol G. Simon Cancer Center's current layout is decentralized, with services and treatment rooms located on different floors. Patients must navigate the entire building during their visit, adding more stress to an already difficult time. In the updated and expanded facility, each patient is assigned a dedicated team to provide the full cycle of care. The team and related services will be co-located making it easy for patients to receive all the services they need in one place. Twenty percent more functional space will be added by removing interior walls to create a flexible open floor plan.

LEVEL 1

To provide a convenient, one-stop outpatient care experience, the lobby will be reconfigured as a Patient Access Center with a central check-in where patients will only have to check-in for an appointment once. Supportive care services will remain on this floor, as will the Women's Cancer Center, Kahn Head and Neck Cancer Institute and the Aresty Radiation Therapy Center. This floor will also include ancillary lab testing, some radiology services, a fast-track area to receive port flushes and injections, a drop-off and pickup area for radiology films and a dispensing pharmacy.

Tomorrow's Challenge

Levels 2-4

The physical space reinforces patient-centered care by assigning each patient a dedicated team that will accompany them during diagnoses, as they’re being treated and, afterward, into survivorship. The team and related support services will be centralized, making it easy for patients to receive all of their care in a single location.

LEVEL 2 - PATIENT CARE "PODS"
.

This floor will include more than 20 state-of-the-art surgical patient care modules that co-locate exam rooms and clinical services to enhance care coordination and patient convenience. The entire care team can see the patient in an environment where the team revolves around the patient. Exam rooms will be larger to accommodate families and will have a large flat screen so patients can review their imaging studies or lab results without leaving the department.

LEVEL 3 - NEW INFUSION CENTER
.

The space will feature a combination of open and private infusion bays, as some patients enjoy interaction, while others prefer a quiet meditative space. Natural light, soothing colors and reclining chairs are among the features that promote the most healing environment possible. This floor will also house patient care modules to allow for a seamless transition from exam room to infusion unit.

LEVEL 4 - RIPPEL BREAST CENTER
.

The recently renovated Rippel Breast Center will remain on this level, as will research and registry teams. Breast surgery will move up to that floor in an adjacent space to optimize patient care flow and convenience.
